Norway-based Reelwell AS has secured a multiyear contract with Vår Energi ASA for its DualLink powered digital drill pipe technology.
The initial contract covers operations on Var Energi’s COSLPioneer rig for one year, with the option of four additional one-year extensions, Reelwell said in a news release.
The contract also includes an option to expand the scope to include all Vår Energi installations across the North Sea, depending on future operational requirements, the company noted.
According to the release, the DualLink system integrates real-time telemetry with wellbore power, “delivering enhanced operational control and ensuring uninterrupted power to downhole tools”.
The technology improves data transmission and ensures more precise, reliable operations throughout the drilling and wells process, allowing Reelwell to oversee the collection and analysis of critical drilling data, “facilitating continuous optimization of wellbore operations on the rig,” it said.
Scotland-based well services technology provider Odfjell Technology will act as a strategic partner to Reelwell AS. This is the first contract since the two companies announced a collaboration in 2024, Reelwell said.
Under the agreement, Reelwell will be responsible for the overall delivery of the contract, while Odfjell Technology will be responsible for all the necessary drill pipe components and accessories for the project. The two companies will oversee the maintenance requirements, while Odjfell Technology will facilitate the logistics handling and on-site support for the rig.
Reelwell CEO Svein Strømberg said, “Today marks an important milestone in the Reelwell journey. The contract with Vår Energi will see the DualLink system deployed offshore on the NCS for the first time. With its unique ability to provide both real-time data and reliable downhole power, DualLink has the potential to revolutionize not only drilling but the entire wells process. From drilling and completions to interventions and beyond, our technology empowers operators to enhance efficiency, precision, and control. We are delighted to embark on this journey with Vår Energi and our valued strategic partner Odfjell Technology”.
Elisabeth Haram, Odjfell Technology EVP for Well Services said, “We are looking forward to collaborating with Reelwell and Vår Energi in this technological step change, unlocking a large potential for future drilling and completion operations with the DualLink technology. The use of innovative powered wired drill pipe technology and real-time data collection will support Vår Energi’s sustainability objectives, reducing both carbon emissions and improving operational efficiency”.
Agreement with R&D Solutions
Meanwhile, Odfjell Technology has entered into a cooperation agreement with Australia-based energy industry equipment and services provider R&D Solutions, in a bid to expand the company’s presence in Asia Pacific.
R&D Solutions is a privately owned company with a track record of 15 years providing drilling, completion, flow control, intervention tools and services to the oil and gas and geothermal markets, according to a separate news release. Headquartered in Perth, Western Australia, the company services customers and service partners across Australia, Asia, Canada, Europe and the USA.
“Expanding our reputation and relationships into Australia is a critical part of our global growth strategy. With strong localised operations already in place across Southeast Asia, we are confident our new cooperation agreement with R&D Solutions will enable the same excellent level of customer service and delivery for the Australian energy market,” Paul Toner, Odjfell Technology Vice President for Middle East and Asia Pacific, said.
Odjfell Technology said it strengthened its plug and abandonment (P&A) and slot recovery offering with the acquisition of McGarian TDC Ltd. in 2024.
