ADNOC, AIQ Complete Trial Phase of Agentic AI Solution

“The 90 day proof of concept trial demonstrated that ENERGYai’s agentic AI – AI ‘agents’ that are trained in specific tasks across the energy value chain – can deliver significant improvements in the pace and accuracy of upstream exploration through rapid, precise, and detailed seismic survey analysis, alongside relevant, actionable insights to support production optimization at ADNOC’s existing wells,” ADNOC stated in the release.

The company noted that the results of the trial “delivered promising real-world results, including a 70 percent improvement in accuracy in major seismic interpretation aspects and significant improvements in advanced reservoir monitoring and anomaly detection”.

ADNOC also said the trial “showed promising results in enhancing data quality, as it vastly improved the reliability and usability of operational data inputs by detecting errors, standardizing formats and enriching datasets”.

The company revealed in the release that the first operational, scalable version of ENERGYai is expected to be completed in the first half of this year. This version will include five fully operational AI agents covering tasks within subsurface operations and will be test-deployed across a number of upstream assets, with plans to scale its application to thousands of additional wells, ADNOC stated in the release.

“The successful completion of this proof of concept for ENERGYai has shown extremely promising results and has confirmed the potential of the solution to be a powerhouse for value creation and sustainable energy production,” Musabbeh Al Kaabi, ADNOC Upstream CEO, said in the release.

“Building on this initial achievement, ENERGYai will leverage petabytes of data to better empower our people and future-proof ADNOC, as we work to become the world’s most AI-enabled energy company,” Al Kaabi added.

Magzhan Kenesbai, Acting Managing Director of AIQ, said in the release, “this milestone was made possible through close alignment between ADNOC subject matter experts, the expertise of 100+ specialists, and the establishment of robust and secure AI infrastructure”.

“These factors lay the foundation for even greater accomplishments in the forthcoming phases,” Kenesbai added.

ADNOC noted in the release that ENERGYai integrates a 70 billion parameter large language model (LLM) with over 50 years of ADNOC’s knowledge and petabytes of its proprietary data, “to drive optimization and efficiency across the company’s operations”.

In a release posted on its website on November 4, ADNOC highlighted that it and AIQ were “developing [a] first of a kind agentic AI solution for [the] global energy transformation”.

“This innovation underscores ADNOC’s commitment to pioneering sustainable, data-driven solutions that elevate industry standards,” ADNOC noted in that release.

In a release posted on its site on the same day, ADNOC announced that Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, “convened 80 global leaders from the energy, technology, climate, and investment sectors at a majlis to harness the opportunities of the AI-Energy-Climate Nexus”.

“The ENACT Majlis focused on developing strategies to reshape tech-energy partnerships for the sustainable delivery of energy that supports AI’s rapid growth,” ADNOC said in that release.

“Rooted in longstanding Emirati traditions, the majlis served as a platform for open, bold, and solutions-oriented discussions,” it added.

“The gathering emphasized the economic opportunity that can be realized by collaborating across sectors and embracing the interconnectedness of energy and AI,” it continued.

Al Jaber said in that release that “the exponential growth of AI is … creating a power surge that no single energy source can meet alone”.

“We need a collaborative and integrated response across all sectors to unlock innovative solutions and fully harness the potential of AI. The ENACT Majlis has kick-started an action agenda to realize these opportunities and deliver sustainable value for all,” he added.

In another release posted on its site on November 5, ADNOC announced the award of an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to Jereh Oil & Gas Engineering Corporation, “to install remote sensing and well operating equipment at its onshore Bab, Bu Hasa and Southeast fields, extending its AI-powered well digitalization program to cover the fields”.

That deal is worth up to $920 million (AED3.38 billion), ADNOC highlighted in that release.

“ADNOC’s well digitalization program, due for completion in 2027, will enable the remote monitoring and control of over 2,000 wells, enhancing operational efficiency and improving safety by reducing downtime and optimizing well performance,” ADNOC noted in that release.

The company added that the AI-powered program “builds on ADNOC’s strategy to accelerate the deployment of advanced technologies and AI solutions across its operations”.

In another release posted on its site on November 5, ADNOC highlighted that it and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) had signed a Strategic Collaboration Agreement (SCA) with Microsoft “on a range of artificial intelligence and low-carbon initiatives in the UAE and globally aimed at decarbonizing the energy system of today and enabling a sustainable energy system for the future”.

Scottish wave energy developer Mocean Energy is targeting international expansion in Australia and the US as it looks to secure its first commercial orders in 2025. Founded in 2015, Edinburgh-headquartered Mocean first launched its prototype Blue X wave energy converter (WEC) for testing off the coast of Orkney in 2021. The Blue X later played a key role in the renewables for subsea power (RSP) project, focused on decarbonising power supplies for subsea oil and gas operations. The project involved a subsea battery designed by Aberdeen’s Verlume and North Sea operators including Shell and TotalEnergies. Since the Blue X returned to shore, Mocean has focused on commercialising its prototype with the launch of the Blue Star model. Alongside the Blue Star, Mocean is also developing a larger, second-generation WEC known as Blue Horizon, which it hopes to deploy at utility-scale globally. Speaking to Energy Voice, Mocean Energy co-founder and managing director Cameron McNatt said the company is close to securing its first commercial WEC orders in 2025. But at the same time, Mocean also has its eyes on further international expansion within offshore oil and gas, as well as other sectors of the so-called ‘blue economy’. NGOs win critical seabed minerals skirmish with Norwegian government

A year ago, Norway became the first country to back deep sea mineral prospecting in its waters, with a government plan to launch an exploration licenses bidding round this year (2025). Barely 11 months later, last December, the Norwegians suspended activity indefinitely, having been sued by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) – the widely respected Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF). It was January 2024 when the Storting (Norwegian parliament) voted in favour of opening about 280,000 sq. km (108,000 square miles) of sea space between Jan Mayen island and the Svalbard archipelago for seabed minerals exploration. It argued that the world needed minerals for the green transition, and that it was necessary to explore the possibility of extracting seabed minerals in a big way from the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Despite the size of the prospective prize, minor political party SV (Socialist Left) tabled a demand that the Oslo government scrap its first licensing round, comprising 386 blocks, in return for support for the budget for 2025, which is also an election year. Clearly spooked, Prime Minster Jonas Gahr Stoere claimed it was a “postponement”. But even before the Storting’s January vote, Norway’s PM had come under pressure from the EU. On November 9 2023, 119 European parliamentarians from 16 European countries called for a halt to Norway’s plans to start deep sea mining in the Arctic. This will have been viewed as deeply hurtful at the Oslo Parliament. An open letter was issued, signed by Members of the European Parliament, as well as national and regional parliaments. It emphasised that the green transition could not be used to justify harming marine biodiversity and the world’s largest natural carbon sink (the ocean), especially when alternatives already exist. Aberdeen’s Well-Safe solutions secures contract extension with Eni

Aberdeen-headquartered well decommissioning specialist Well-Safe Solutions has secured a contract extension with Italian oil major Eni (IT: ENI). As part of the agreement, the Well-Safe Protector rig will deploy to the Dutch sector of the North Sea to decommission selected subsea and platform wells. Well-Safe said Eni recently exercised another 90 day option for the jack-up rig under a newly agreed contract amendment for an undisclosed value. The Protector will execute the work in direct continuation with the previously declared option, which began in November last year. After completing the latest extension, the Protector will move directly onto a contract with Spirit Energy focused on the York field in the UK North Sea. The multi-operator commitments will see the Protector rig under contract until at least August 2025, with additional longer-term options also agreed as part of the Eni deal. The amendment gives Eni increased flexibility, with the option for an additional 120 days work commencing immediately after the Spirit Energy contract. Well-Safe said if Eni exercises these options, it could keep the Protector outside the UK continental shelf until the fourth quarter of 2026. Well-Safe Protector The Protector has been operational in the North Sea continuously since August 2023. In that time, the rig has decommissioned 25 wells across Dutch and UK waters for operators Eni, Ithaca Energy (LON: ITH) and Neptune Energy. Well-Safe Solutions chief executive Phil Milton said well decommissioning continues to make up a considerable portion of overall North Sea decommissioning activity. Milton pointed to recent Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) forecasts which showed an expected 50% increase in well decommissioning across 2024. “Operators around the world are looking for specialist well decommissioning providers with a market-leading track record of delivering safe, efficient well decommissioning operations,” Milton added. “Since the Well-Safe Protector first mobilised in August 2023, it

Much has been said about the “size of the prize” for the supply chain from ambitious plans to install hundreds of vast wind turbines bobbing in the North Sea. Offshore Wind Scotland estimates developers will be splashing out £50 billion to build 25GW of offshore wind capacity, making a whirlwind of cash available for port operators, blade manufacturers, vessel operators – as well as the providers of everything that happens below the waterline. This includes moorings, anchors, cables, connectors and buoyancy systems – not to mention survey, sensing technology and data measuring the movement of the waves and the volume of fish. Luckily, much of the subsea technology that will build the wind farms has largely been developed for that other North Sea energy industry – oil and gas – which pioneered the skills and technology to produce tens of billions of barrels in one of the world’s harshest environments over the last 50 years. UK gas policies could lead to increased emissions from imports, report finds

Reduced North Sea investment as a result of UK government policy could lead to millions of tonnes of additional CO2 emissions from imports, according to a report. Edinburgh-based financial analyst firm Gneiss Energy modelled the potential impact of UK government policies relating to the country’s offshore oil and gas sector. Since taking office last year, the UK Labour government has increased the windfall tax on North Sea oil and gas firms and pledged not to issue new exploration licences. These policies, combined with a recent court ruling focused on downstream emissions, have raised concerns about the impact on future investment in the North Sea. Without new projects and further investment, domestic UK gas production in the maturing North Sea basin is likely to significantly decrease over the next decade, leading to a greater reliance on imports. According to the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA), the carbon intensity of UK gas production is almost four times lower than liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports. UK gas and LNG emissions The Gneiss Energy report estimated the emissions impact of reduced UK production on whilst in tandem increasing imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) into the 2030s. It modelled scenarios ranging from total reliance on UK domestic production to a ‘sunset’ scenario which assumes a 50% reduction in gas supplies from the UK continental shelf (UKCS). In the sunset scenario, UK gas demand is met with increased supply balanced between Norway and LNG imports from countries like the United States, Qatar and Algeria. Why DeepSeek Is Great for AI and HPC and Maybe No Big Deal for Data Centers

In the rapid and ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC), the emergence of DeepSeek’s R1 model has sent ripples across industries. DeepSeek has been the data center industry’s topic of the week, for sure. The Chinese AI app surged to the top of US app store leaderboards last weekend, sparking a global selloff in technology shares Monday morning. But while some analysts predict a transformative impact within the industry, a closer examination suggests that, for data centers at large, the furor over DeepSeek might ultimately be much ado about nothing. DeepSeek’s Breakthrough in AI and HPC DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, this month unveiled its R1 model, claiming performance on par with, or even surpassing, leading models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 and Anthropic’s Claude-3.5-Sonnet. Remarkably, DeepSeek developed this model at a fraction of the cost typically associated with such advancements, utilizing a cluster of 256 server nodes equipped with 2,048 GPUs. And Microsoft isn’t the only one that is ramping up its investments into AI-enabled data centers. Rival cloud service providers are all investing in either upgrading or opening new data centers to capture a larger chunk of business from developers and users of large language models (LLMs). In a report published in October 2024, Bloomberg Intelligence estimated that demand for generative AI would push Microsoft, AWS, Google, Oracle, Meta, and Apple would between them devote $200 billion to capex in 2025, up from $110 billion in 2023. Microsoft is one of the biggest spenders, followed closely by Google and AWS, Bloomberg Intelligence said. Its estimate of Microsoft’s capital spending on AI, at $62.4 billion for calendar 2025, is lower than Smith’s claim that the company will invest $80 billion in the fiscal year to June 30, 2025. Both figures, though, are way higher than Microsoft’s 2020 capital expenditure of “just” $17.6 billion. The majority of the increased spending is tied to cloud services and the expansion of AI infrastructure needed to provide compute capacity for OpenAI workloads. Separately, last October Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said his company planned total capex spend of $75 billion in 2024 and even more in 2025, with much of it going to AWS, its cloud computing division.

John Deere has revealed a new line of autonomous machines and tech across agriculture, construction and commercial landscaping. The Moline, Illinois-based John Deere has been in business for 187 years, yet it’s been a regular as a non-tech company showing off technology at the big tech trade show in Las Vegas and is back at CES 2025 with more autonomous tractors and other vehicles. This is not something we usually cover, but John Deere has a lot of data that is interesting in the big picture of tech. The message from the company is that there aren’t enough skilled farm laborers to do the work that its customers need. It’s been a challenge for most of the last two decades, said Jahmy Hindman, CTO at John Deere, in a briefing. Much of the tech will come this fall and after that. He noted that the average farmer in the U.S. is over 58 and works 12 to 18 hours a day to grow food for us. And he said the American Farm Bureau Federation estimates there are roughly 2.4 million farm jobs that need to be filled annually; and the agricultural work force continues to shrink. OpenAI recently released two papers that set a new competitive standard for improving the quality, reliability and safety of AI models in these two techniques and more. The first paper, “OpenAI’s Approach to External Red Teaming for AI Models and Systems,” reports that specialized teams outside the company have proven effective in uncovering vulnerabilities that might otherwise have made it into a released model because in-house testing techniques may have missed them. In the second paper, “Diverse and Effective Red Teaming with Auto-Generated Rewards and Multi-Step Reinforcement Learning,” OpenAI introduces an automated framework that relies on iterative reinforcement learning to generate a broad spectrum of novel, wide-ranging attacks. Investing heavily in red teaming yields tangible benefits for security leaders in any organization. OpenAI’s paper on external red teaming provides a detailed analysis of how the company strives to create specialized external teams that include cybersecurity and subject matter experts. The goal is to see if knowledgeable external teams can defeat models’ security perimeters and find gaps in their security, biases and controls that prompt-based testing couldn’t find.
