Netskope is expanding its global presence by adding multiple regions to its NewEdge carrier-grade infrastructure, which now includes more than 75 locations to ensure processing remains close to end users. The secure access service edge (SASE) provider also enhanced its digital experience monitoring (DEM) capabilities with AI-powered root-cause analysis and automated network diagnostics.

“We are announcing continued expansion of our infrastructure and our continued focus on resilience. I’m a believer that nothing gets adopted if end users don’t have a great experience,” says Netskope CEO Sanjay Beri. “We monitor traffic, we have multiple carriers in every one of our more than 75 regions, and when traffic goes from us to that destination, the path is direct.”

Netskope added regions including data centers in Calgary, Helsinki, Lisbon, and Prague as well as expanded existing NewEdge regions including data centers in Bogota, Jeddah, Osaka, and New York City. Each data center offers customers a range of SASE capabilities including cloud firewalls, secure web gateway (SWG), inline cloud access security broker (CASB), zero trust network access (ZTNA), SD-WAN, secure service edge (SSE), and threat protection. The additional locations enable Netskope to provide coverage for more than 220 countries and territories with 200 NewEdge Localization Zones, which deliver a local direct-to-net digital experience for users, the company says.

BP’s Reset Plan Shows Early Vulnerability as Oil Nears $70

BP Plc’s strategy reset isn’t even a week old, but it’s already showing some vulnerabilities. The London-based energy giant was the second-worst performer on the FTSE-100 on Tuesday following a plunge in crude prices. Its shares fell 4.2% to the lowest in a month, compared with a drop of 3% for Shell Plc.  The decision by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies to finally go ahead with a long delayed plan to revive production, combined with President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China, pushed Brent crude toward $70 a barrel in London — a key level for BP.  Two of the company’s most important pledges to investors — to increase cash flow by more than 20% a year to 2027, and raise returns on average capital employed that year above 16% — require Brent above $70. The international benchmark is likely to fall below that crucial threshold, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. BP Chief Executive Officer Murray Auchincloss acknowledged at the time that crude prices would depend on external factors that are “hard to predict.” “It’s entwined in US politics,” he said in an interview on Thursday. “How do relationships unfold with Russia? How do relationships unfold with Iran? How do relationships unfold with OPEC?” BP’s slide and the drop in crude prices complicates a bet by Elliott Investment Management, which has bought up around 5% of BP. The activist investor has been ramping up pressure on BP after its new strategy fell short of its expectations, people with knowledge of the matter said. ‘You would not believe how difficult’ Green Volt wind farm was

Lord Nicol Stephen set out the challenges facing the UK’s ability to deliver floating offshore wind capacity, warning the process facing developers was “at times infuriatingly hard and we need to speed up”. The former Deputy First Minister of Scotland, who now leads offshore wind developer Flotation Energy, highlighted the progress the firm is making on its projects including the 560MW Green Volt offshore wind project planned on a site 50 miles (80 km) off the east coast of Scotland. Green Volt was a clean energy highlight of 2024 when it became the first floating offshore wind scheme to win support in the UK government’s contracts for difference (CfD) funding round, called allocation round six (AR6). Flotation, along with its partner Vårgrønn, is also planning Cenos, a 1.4GW floating wind scheme much further out to sea, 118m (190km) from Peterhead. The company made waves when it delivered the Kincardine floating offshore wind farm, whose five turbines are visible from Aberdeen. Speaking at the opening session of the Scottish Energy Futures conference in Aberdeen, Stephen, who also spent a stint as an energy minister for Scotland, said: “We certainly need wind. We certainly need offshore wind. We certainly need offshore floating wind. We need solar, we need storage. Massachusetts to deploy 100 bidirectional EV chargers in first-of-its-kind ‘V2X’ pilot

Dive Brief: The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center will deploy 100 bidirectional electric vehicle chargers at no cost to residential, commercial, municipal and school customers as part of a two-year “vehicle-to-everything” demonstration, program partners Resource Innovations and The Mobility House said Feb. 24. The demonstration will add an estimated 1.5 MW of distributed energy storage capacity across Massachusetts by September 2026, when MassCEC expects all installations to be completed, Resource Innovations and TMH said. Calling the demonstration “a crucial step in Massachusetts’s efforts to enable wide-scale adoption of electric vehicles,” MassCEC Senior Director of Clean Transportation Rachel Ackerman said in a statement that the multi-sector deployment would help identify and resolve barriers to “accelerated application of V2X technology.” Dive Insight: The deployment is a “first-of-its-kind statewide [program] to enhance grid resilience, reduce energy costs and increase renewable energy integration across Massachusetts,” Resource Innovations and TMH said last month. MassCEC expects to install 50 to 60 chargers at single-family residential locations, with a focus on homes located in low-income and disadvantaged communities; 30 to 40 chargers at three to five commercial sites; and 10 to 20 chargers at three school bus storage sites. Participants must own or plan to purchase bidirectional-capable EVs, it says. The program allows participants to use their vehicles for site backup power, self-consumption and participation in revenue-producing ConnectedSolutions grid events, MassCEC says. Resource Innovations will provide program design, management, implementation and reporting, while TMH will contribute vehicle-grid integration software, they said. Striking true or overreaching? How a new executive order clouds FERC’s decisional authority

As the White House sets new guidance for regulatory agencies, a new executive order brings fresh attention to states’ rights, executive power and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s jurisdictional boundaries. The Federal Power Act establishes a clear division: states oversee retail electricity services, while FERC oversees interstate transmission and wholesale electricity markets. The statute explicitly provides that federal jurisdiction “shall not extend to facilities used in local distribution,” nor may FERC regulate “any other sale of electric energy” beyond wholesale transactions. Recent developments suggest that FERC is testing the limits of the authority Congress gave it. Multiple proceedings before the commission — including Order 1920, on long-term planning for regional transmission expansion and co-located load disputes — implicate longstanding jurisdictional limits that Congress has never disturbed. Executive Order 14215, which President Trump signed on Feb. 18, directs executive agencies to conform their legal interpretations to the views of the executive branch. While FERC is not directly bound by presidential directives in the same manner as executive agencies, the order’s broad language could be interpreted as pressuring independent commissions to align with the administration’s legal position. Honoré de Balzac said “Power is not revealed by striking hard or often, but by striking true.” In some proceedings, the executive order could strike true and help keep FERC within its statutory authority. EPA $20B funding freeze leaves ‘green bank’ nonprofits unable to pay bills

Dive Brief: The Environmental Protection Agency has frozen access to $20 billion in Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund grants, leaving the grantees in a precarious financial position, said a spokesperson for the Climate United Fund. Last April, the Climate United Fund was tapped to manage $6.97 billion from the National Clean Investment Fund, a program under the GGRF program. So far, it has made investments that include a $10.8 million pre-development loan for utility-scale solar projects on tribal lands in eastern Oregon and Idaho and $250 million toward electric truck manufacturing. In a Monday letter to the EPA Office of Inspector General’s acting inspector general, Nicole Murley, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said the EPA has “launched certain oversight and accountability measures” to investigate the GGRF fund disbursement for “financial mismanagement, conflicts of interest, and oversight failures.” Dive Insight: Inflation Reduction Act funding was used to create the GGRF “to mobilize financing and private capital to address the climate crisis, ensure our country’s economic competitiveness, and promote energy independence while delivering lower energy costs and economic revitalization to communities that have historically been left behind,” according to the fund’s website. “We have placed staff on administrative leave, begun a full assessment of internal controls, and are cooperating with the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation in their ongoing investigation,” Zeldin said of the measures EPA has taken. The Climate United Fund’s $6.97 billion grant held by Citibank has been frozen since Feb. 18. Natural gas prices are starting to look exciting to bulls. That’s what Phil Flynn, a senior market analyst at the PRICE Futures Group, told Rigzone in an exclusive interview on Tuesday when asked why the U.S. natural gas price is rising today. “If you would have asked many natural gas traders a few months ago where inventories would be, hardly any of them would have predicted that supplies in the U.S. would be as low as … [they are] now,” Flynn said. “Add to that the swing demand in Europe and the expectations that we’re going to see not only an increase in LNG exports in the coming months but also predictions of a hot in dry summer, all of a sudden natural gas prices are starting to look exciting to bulls and we haven’t seen that for a long time,” he added. “In fact, hedge funds are now embracing the long side of natural gas, which is almost like a change in religion from where they were,” Flynn continued. Does It Matter If Microsoft Is Cancelling AI Data Center Leases?

Strategic Reallocation: Microsoft is a major owner and operator of data centers and might be reallocating resources to in-house infrastructure rather than leased spaces. Supply Chain Delays: TD Cowen noted that Microsoft used power and facility delays as justifications for voiding agreements, a tactic previously employed by Meta. Oversupply Issues: Analysts at TD Cowen speculate that Microsoft may have overestimated AI demand, leading to an excess in capacity. As it is all speculation, it could simply be that the latest information has driven Microsoft to reevaluate demand and move to more closely align projected supply with projected demand. Microsoft has reiterated their commitment to spend $80 billion on AI in the coming year. Reallocating this spending internally or wit a different set of partners remains on the table. And when you put the TD Cowen report that Microsoft has cancelled leases for “a couple hundred megawatts” into context with Microsoft’s overall leased power, which is estimated at around 20 GW, you see that more than 98% of their energy commitment remains unchanged. Investment Markets Might See the Biggest Hits Microsoft’s retreat has had ripple effects on the stock market, particularly among energy and infrastructure companies. European firms like Schneider Electric and Siemens Energy experienced a decline in stock value, indicating fears that major AI companies might scale back energy-intensive data center investments. Microsoft will invest $80B in AI data centers in fiscal 2025

And Microsoft isn’t the only one that is ramping up its investments into AI-enabled data centers. Rival cloud service providers are all investing in either upgrading or opening new data centers to capture a larger chunk of business from developers and users of large language models (LLMs).  In a report published in October 2024, Bloomberg Intelligence estimated that demand for generative AI would push Microsoft, AWS, Google, Oracle, Meta, and Apple would between them devote $200 billion to capex in 2025, up from $110 billion in 2023. Microsoft is one of the biggest spenders, followed closely by Google and AWS, Bloomberg Intelligence said. Its estimate of Microsoft’s capital spending on AI, at $62.4 billion for calendar 2025, is lower than Smith’s claim that the company will invest $80 billion in the fiscal year to June 30, 2025. Both figures, though, are way higher than Microsoft’s 2020 capital expenditure of “just” $17.6 billion. The majority of the increased spending is tied to cloud services and the expansion of AI infrastructure needed to provide compute capacity for OpenAI workloads. John Deere has revealed a new line of autonomous machines and tech across agriculture, construction and commercial landscaping. The Moline, Illinois-based John Deere has been in business for 187 years, yet it’s been a regular as a non-tech company showing off technology at the big tech trade show in Las Vegas and is back at CES 2025 with more autonomous tractors and other vehicles. This is not something we usually cover, but John Deere has a lot of data that is interesting in the big picture of tech. The message from the company is that there aren’t enough skilled farm laborers to do the work that its customers need. It’s been a challenge for most of the last two decades, said Jahmy Hindman, CTO at John Deere, in a briefing. Much of the tech will come this fall and after that. He noted that the average farmer in the U.S. is over 58 and works 12 to 18 hours a day to grow food for us. And he said the American Farm Bureau Federation estimates there are roughly 2.4 million farm jobs that need to be filled annually; and the agricultural work force continues to shrink. Farmers can oversee it using an app. While each of these industries experiences their own set of challenges, a commonality across all is skilled labor availability. In construction, about 80% percent of contractors struggle to find skilled labor. OpenAI recently released two papers that set a new competitive standard for improving the quality, reliability and safety of AI models in these two techniques and more. The first paper, “OpenAI’s Approach to External Red Teaming for AI Models and Systems,” reports that specialized teams outside the company have proven effective in uncovering vulnerabilities that might otherwise have made it into a released model because in-house testing techniques may have missed them. In the second paper, “Diverse and Effective Red Teaming with Auto-Generated Rewards and Multi-Step Reinforcement Learning,” OpenAI introduces an automated framework that relies on iterative reinforcement learning to generate a broad spectrum of novel, wide-ranging attacks.
