I don’t think anyone will doubt there’s a very strong distinction between what we do for work, and for our mental health.

The jobs that we do, and everything that comes with them, play a huge part in our lives.

From the aspirational and emotional side, the desire to develop, succeed and do something meaningful, to the physical side, with the need to provide and enjoy the life we want to live.

To achieve the career utopia we seek, we need to head into the sometimes-dreaded recruitment process.

Yep, we need to apply for jobs.

But while it’s understandably approached with trepidation, what is sometimes overlooked is that through applying for jobs, a chance to work on our wellbeing and mental health arises.

Which in the long run gives us better odds in achieving our career goal.

I know there are challenges in finding a job, but to make that next career step, no matter why you are looking for something new, we must stop and check in with ourselves.

This is your career. You’re doing this for you and your world. Others benefit from the work we do, but this is for you first and foremost.

No career will progress, no application will be sent, no interview will be attended, without you, in whatever fashion you prefer, asking yourself: “What do I want to do next?”

Questions like “Who am I?”, “What do I offer?”, “Why do I want to do this?” will follow.

Deep, meaningful, thought-provoking, personal questions. Questions that lead you to answers and actions that positively impact your life.

Which, if done meaningfully, can only be good for our mental health.

Very rarely do we give ourselves time to check in with what’s really important.

We are all guilty of bypassing our feelings and living on autopilot in this ‘back-to-back meetings’ and ‘wearing many hats’ world we live in.

And like me, you’ve likely felt the impact of not stopping and taking a breath.

Applying for jobs gives you the onus to do just that and provide a wonderful opportunity to use that period of career reflection to your advantage, for your mental health and career.

And when what we do for work is so important, we really should give ourselves the space to get this right. To look inward, and plan outward.

How this impacts our job search

Once we’re in that positive mindset of feeling driven, purposeful, grounded, and self-aware, then we’re onto the next step.

In any job search, we must connect to wants, needs and goals. Tap into values, traits, experiences and skills.

Recall achievements, challenges that have been overcome and relationships formed. The hard and good times.

The process will then ask you, what’s next for you?  What do you want to do? Why do you want to do it? How will you make it happen?

That’s an empowering place to be. Truly connecting with who you are and what’s important. And believe me, CV’s, cover letters and applications become much easier and enjoyable when you’ve stopped and done all the above.

This is exactly how job hunting and hiring should go. You confidently aligning to your and the employers’ needs, and the employer understanding you, right from the ‘I’d like to apply for the position’ on your cover letter.

It’s not always smooth, but if we’ve truly connected with ourselves, what you want to happen can only end positively.

Through giving your mental health some attention, the applications, interviews and even how you respond to any rejections, you’ll be in a good headspace.

That can only be a good thing for ourselves, those close to us and our future employers and colleagues.

SeAH Wind brings in three contractors for Hornsea 3 work

SeAH Wind has brought in Mammoet, Glacier Energy, and Hutchinson Engineering as key subcontractors for Ørsted’s 2.9GW Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Project. SeAH Wind was previously brought in to supply monopiles for the project, which will be situated around 75 miles (120km) off the Norfolk Coast in the North Sea. With commercial production set to commence in the coming months, these subcontractors have been selected to support the operational and logistical services within the 120-acre site located on the South Bank of Teesworks. Mammoet has been appointed to provide self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) within the SeAH Wind facility. Their scope includes the transportation of can/cone structures and completed monopiles. By leveraging Mammoet’s expertise in heavy transport solutions in offshore wind site logistics, SeAH Wind ensures a seamless and efficient movement of monopiles, minimising downtime and improving overall production efficiency. Glacier Energy will conduct non-destructive testing (NDT) of welds throughout the manufacturing process, ensuring the highest quality standards. Their rigorous NDT inspections will enhance the reliability and durability of the monopiles, ensuring they meet both Ørsted’s stringent standards and international offshore wind regulations. Hutchinson Engineering has been tasked with supplying secondary steel components for the Hornsea 3 project. SeAH Wind sought a UK-based company capable of delivering these complex parts in compliance with stringent Ørsted drawings and specifications. Hutchinson Engineering’s previous experience on Ørsted projects, combined with their expertise, makes them an ideal partner for this phase of the project. EPL end date: ‘We need to make the changes now,’ says North Sea boss

As the UK government kicked off consultations on a successor tax regime to the Energy Profits Levy (EPL), Anasuria said that changes are needed “now” to save the North Sea. Anasuria Operating Company (AOC) chief executive Richard Beattie said: “I would say we need to make the changes now. “I do think the government is listening, I do think there has been positive engagement, I think we’ve seen shoots of that at the last budget.” Since its introduction in 2022 by then chancellor Rishi Sunak, the EPL, or windfall tax, has been a pain point for the UK oil and gas industry. Initially bringing the headline rate of tax imposed on North Sea operators to 75%, late last year the Labour government hiked rates by 3% as it closed investment incentives previously afforded to oil firms. In the Autumn Budget, chancellor Rachel Reeves also extended the end date of the EPL to March 2030, something it has stuck to as the government launched a consultation on the country’s tax regime and licencing regulations. However, waiting until the start of the next decade to rethink the North Sea’s controversial tax regime may be too late to save investment. “Every drinks reception I’m at, I’m talking to people and they’re talking about putting investment on hold, massive opportunities that they have that they want to invest in but with the uncertainty in terms of the number of changes that just brings natural suspicion,” Beattie added. He argued that, unlike how the UK was previously an appealing place to invest for oil and gas companies “it is simply unattractive” in the current global context. LandBridge at Loss for 2024 but Signals Shift in Q4

LandBridge Company LLC has reported a significant jump in net income for the fourth quarter of 2024 but remained in the red on an annual basis. LandBridge said its net income for the last quarter of the year was $8.2 million, recovering from a $2.8 million net loss for the previous quarter and increasing from the $2.5 million net income reported for the corresponding quarter a year prior. However, for the full year 2024, LandBridge reported a net loss of $41.5 million, compared to a net income of $63.2 million a year before. That is despite full-year revenues growing 51 percent to $110 million. “In 2024, we tripled the size of our land holdings, delivered high-double-digit revenue growth year-over-year, and demonstrated our ability to deliver industry-leading adjusted EBITDA and free cash flow margins. With more than 270,000 acres across the most active oil and natural gas development and production region of the prolific Permian Basin, we are uniquely positioned to capitalize on opportunities in energy and digital infrastructure to create sustainable value for our shareholders”, Jason Long, Chief Executive Officer, said. Revenue for the fourth quarter of 2024 amounted to $36.5 million, compared to $28.5 million for the third quarter of 2024 and $17.5 million for the fourth quarter of 2023. The increase from the previous quarter was mainly due to a rise in easements and other surface-related revenue by $8.2 million, along with oil and gas royalties increasing by $1.6 million and surface use royalties increasing by $0.7 million. European Commission Schedules New Round for Coordinated Gas Deals

The European Commission has announced a second midterm round for AggregateEU, a mechanism where international natural gas suppliers compete to book demand offered by companies in the EU and its Energy Community partner countries. In the new round buyers can express their demand for July 2025-October 2030. Buyers and sellers have until March 10 to register on the online portal of the AggregateEU service provider, PRISMA. Demand submission is scheduled for March 12-17. Vendors must file expressions of interest from March 18 to 21. The Commission will publish matchmaking results March 26, after which buyers and sellers bilaterally negotiate contracts. “This mid-term matching round reinforces the Commission’s continued commitment to the phase-out of Russian gas supplies to the EU”, the Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy said in an online statement. The first midterm round, whose demand submission phase closed last month, pooled a total of 34 billion cubic meters (1.1 trillion cubic feet) of demand from 19 companies including industrial players. Meanwhile offers totaled 97.4 billion cubic meters, almost triple the demand, according to the Commission. Aggregate EU was initially only meant for the 2023-24 winter season but the EU, citing lessons from the prolonged effects of the energy crisis, has made it a permanent mechanism under “Regulation (EU) 2024/1789 on the internal markets for renewable gas, natural gas and hydrogen”, adopted June 13, 2024. “In previous matching rounds, buyers and sellers could indicate a preferred terminal in the EU for the delivery of liquified natural gas”, the Directorate said when announcing the new midterm round. “To better reflect LNG trade practices and attract additional international suppliers, buyers and sellers can also indicate their preference to have the LNG delivered free-on-board”. The pace of change around server technology is advancing considerably, driven by hyperscalers but spilling over into the on-premises world as well. There are numerous overall trends, experts say, including: AI Everything: AI mania is everywhere and without high power hardware to run it, it’s just vapor. But it’s more than just a buzzword, it is a very real and measurable trend. AI servers are notable because they are decked out with high end CPUs, GPU accelerators, and oftentimes a SmartNIC network controller.  All the major players — Nvidia, Supermicro, Google, Asus, Dell, Intel, HPE — as well as smaller vendors are offering purpose-built AI hardware, according to a recent Network World article. AI edge server growth: There is also a trend towards deploying AI edge servers. Considerable amounts of data are collected on the edge.  Edge servers do the job of culling the useless data and sending only the necessary data back to data centers for processing. Liquid cooling gains ground: Liquid cooling is inching its way in from the fringes into the mainstream of data center infrastructure. Data center vacancies hit historic lows despite record construction

The growth comes despite considerable headwinds facing data center operators, including higher construction costs, equipment pricing, and persistent shortages in critical materials like generators, chillers and transformers, CRBE stated. There is a considerable pricing disparity between newly built data centers and legacy facilities, reflecting the premium placed on modern, energy-efficient infrastructure. Specifically, liquid/immersion cooling is preferred over air cooling for modern server requirements, CRBE found. On the networking side of things, major telecom companies made substantial investments in fiber in the second half of 2024, reflecting the growing need for more network infrastructure and capacity to accommodate growing demand from AI and data providers. There have also been many notable deals recently: AT&T’s multi-year, $1 billion agreement with Corning to provide next-generation fiber, cable and connectivity solutions; Comcast’s proposed acquisition of Nitel; Verizon’s agreement to acquire Frontier, the largest pure-play fiber internet provider in the U.S.; and T-Mobile’s entry into the fiber internet market via partnerships with fiber-optic providers. In the quarter, Meta announced plans for a 25,000-mile undersea fiber cable that would connect the U.S. East and West coasts with global markets across the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. AI driving a 165% rise in data center power demand by 2030

Goldman Sachs Research estimates the power usage by the global data center market to be around 55 gigawatts, which breaks down as 54% for cloud computing workloads, 32% for traditional line of business workloads and 14% for AI. By 2027, that number jumps to 84 GW, with AI growing to 27% of the overall market, cloud dropping to 50%, and traditional workloads falling to 23%, Schneider stated. Goldman Sachs Research estimates that there will be around 122 GW of data center capacity online by the end of 2030, and the density of power use in data centers is likely to grow as well, from 162 kilowatts per square foot to 176 KW per square foot in 2027, thanks to AI, Schneider stated.  “Data center supply — specifically the rate at which incremental supply is built — has been constrained over the past 18 months,” Schneider wrote. These constraints have arisen from the inability of utilities to expand transmission capacity because of permitting delays, supply chain bottlenecks, and infrastructure that is both costly and time-intensive to upgrade. The result is that due to power demand from data centers, there will need to be additional utility investment, to the tune of about $720 billion of grid spending through 2030. And then they are subject to the pace of public utilities, which move much slower than hyperscalers. “These transmission projects can take several years to permit, and then several more to build, creating another potential bottleneck for data center growth if the regions are not proactive about this given the lead time,” Schneider wrote.

Netskope is expanding its global presence by adding multiple regions to its NewEdge carrier-grade infrastructure, which now includes more than 75 locations to ensure processing remains close to end users. The secure access service edge (SASE) provider also enhanced its digital experience monitoring (DEM) capabilities with AI-powered root-cause analysis and automated network diagnostics. “We are announcing continued expansion of our infrastructure and our continued focus on resilience. Microsoft will invest $80B in AI data centers in fiscal 2025

And Microsoft isn’t the only one that is ramping up its investments into AI-enabled data centers. Rival cloud service providers are all investing in either upgrading or opening new data centers to capture a larger chunk of business from developers and users of large language models (LLMs).  In a report published in October 2024, Bloomberg Intelligence estimated that demand for generative AI would push Microsoft, AWS, Google, Oracle, Meta, and Apple would between them devote $200 billion to capex in 2025, up from $110 billion in 2023. Microsoft is one of the biggest spenders, followed closely by Google and AWS, Bloomberg Intelligence said. Its estimate of Microsoft’s capital spending on AI, at $62.4 billion for calendar 2025, is lower than Smith’s claim that the company will invest $80 billion in the fiscal year to June 30, 2025. Both figures, though, are way higher than Microsoft’s 2020 capital expenditure of “just” $17.6 billion. The majority of the increased spending is tied to cloud services and the expansion of AI infrastructure needed to provide compute capacity for OpenAI workloads. Separately, last October Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said his company planned total capex spend of $75 billion in 2024 and even more in 2025, with much of it going to AWS, its cloud computing division.

John Deere unveils more autonomous farm machines to address skill labor shortage

John Deere has revealed a new line of autonomous machines and tech across agriculture, construction and commercial landscaping. The Moline, Illinois-based John Deere has been in business for 187 years, yet it’s been a regular as a non-tech company showing off technology at the big tech trade show in Las Vegas and is back at CES 2025 with more autonomous tractors and other vehicles. This is not something we usually cover, but John Deere has a lot of data that is interesting in the big picture of tech. The message from the company is that there aren’t enough skilled farm laborers to do the work that its customers need. It’s been a challenge for most of the last two decades, said Jahmy Hindman, CTO at John Deere, in a briefing. Much of the tech will come this fall and after that. He noted that the average farmer in the U.S. is over 58 and works 12 to 18 hours a day to grow food for us. And he said the American Farm Bureau Federation estimates there are roughly 2.4 million farm jobs that need to be filled annually; and the agricultural work force continues to shrink. OpenAI recently released two papers that set a new competitive standard for improving the quality, reliability and safety of AI models in these two techniques and more. The first paper, “OpenAI’s Approach to External Red Teaming for AI Models and Systems,” reports that specialized teams outside the company have proven effective in uncovering vulnerabilities that might otherwise have made it into a released model because in-house testing techniques may have missed them. In the second paper, “Diverse and Effective Red Teaming with Auto-Generated Rewards and Multi-Step Reinforcement Learning,” OpenAI introduces an automated framework that relies on iterative reinforcement learning to generate a broad spectrum of novel, wide-ranging attacks.
