With the Jotun FPSO installed as an area host, Vår Energi is taking steps to add new production through infill drilling, exploration, and tie-back developments with short time to market, the company said.

“We have continued to grow our resource base through successful exploration in the area and are stepping up the pace, moving several tie-back projects forward at speed to capitalize on the Jotun FPSO. This will sustain production longer term and includes Balder Phase V, planned to come on stream later this year, and Balder Phase VI expected to be sanctioned in 2025, together adding a further 45-50 MMboe gross,” said Torger Rød, chief operating officer (OGJ Online, Oct. 25, 2024).

Several early phase projects in in the Greater Balder are progressing toward a final investment decision, including Ringhorne North, Balder future phases, and the King discovery, targeting gross contingent resources of more than 70 MMboe, the company said.

Vår Energi is operator (90%) of Balder field. Kistos Energy Norway AS holds the remaining 10%.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas on Thursday approved a slimmed-down version of CenterPoint Energy’s system resiliency plan, ultimately approving about $2.7 billion for strategic hardening investments over the next three years. Texas lawmakers in 2023 required electric utilities to submit resiliency plans to improve grid reliability. Oncor Electric’s $3 billion plan was the first to be approved, in November, and Entergy’s $137 million plan was approved in January. CenterPoint’s original resiliency plan, filed in January, came in with a price tag of $5.75 billion. A June settlement cut the ask to $3.2 billion, and at the PUCT open meeting last week more was removed by commissioners. Avangrid Signs 72 MW Deal with SmartEnergy

Iberdrola Group’s U.S. energy company, Avangrid Inc., has signed a contract with SmartEnergy for the delivery of full capacity from the Lampster and Groton energy projects. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projected that the U.S. on-highway diesel fuel price will fall in 2025 and 2026 in its latest short term energy outlook (STEO), which was released on August 12. Lake Charles LNG Gets More Time to Start Exports

The Lake Charles LNG project in Louisiana now has until 2031 to dispatch its first cargo, according to an order by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) granting owner Energy Transfer LP’s request to extend the deadline from 2025. The DOE decision also adds a three-year “make-up period” to the duration of the project’s export term. That means if Lake Charles LNG has not exhausted its authorized export volume by 2050, it has until 2053 to export the remaining volumes. “Granting this commencement extension furthers the Trump administration’s priority of unleashing American energy, a radical shift from the last administration, whose actions undermined the progress of Lake Charles LNG for years”, Tala Goudarzi, principal deputy assistant secretary of DOE’s Fossil Energy and Carbon Management Office, said in an online statement issued by the department. “There are currently eight large-scale LNG projects operating in the United States and several additional projects are expanding or under construction”, DOE added. “Under President Trump’s leadership, the department has approved applications from projects that will export more than 13.8 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas as LNG, a volume greater than the world’s second-largest LNG-exporting nation is exporting today”. OneCore is a unified “slab-up,” factory-assembled, turnkey platform that integrates the company’s power, thermal, and IT infrastructure systems within a pre-assembled shell. Slab-up is a data center design where equipment—such as server racks and cabinets—are installed directly on a solid concrete slab floor, rather than on a raised floor system. Vertiv says the design simplifies logistics, minimizes on-site labor and complexity, and supports consistent quality, cost, and schedule outcomes. Adaptive routing ensures the network and GPUs over long distances are in sync when running AI workloads, Shainer said. The rise of the AI Factory and AI-driven data center designs has made announcements of massive new complexes routine, with claims and certainties that these facilities will require hundreds of megawatts of power scarcely raising an industry eyebrow. At the same time, opposition is becoming more organized, often forming unexpected alliances. Even in an era of clear political alignment around certain causes, blocking data center projects has emerged as a bipartisan concern among voters. In the past several months, as data center projects in the gigawatt range have been announced, significant behind-the-scenes opposition has been building, from local grassroots organizations to state legislatures crafting new guidelines for data center development. Rising Community Opposition In 2025, multiple communities across the U.S., from Northern Virginia to Indiana, Texas, Arizona, Georgia, and Alabama, have effectively organized to challenge proposed data center developments. Some campaigns have already succeeded in delaying or derailing projects, while others are still building momentum. A report from Data Center Watch, covering the period from May 2024 to March 2025, estimates that billions in data center investment have already been affected by local resistance: $18 billion in projects were blocked, and another $46 billion faced delays. And Microsoft isn’t the only one that is ramping up its investments into AI-enabled data centers. Rival cloud service providers are all investing in either upgrading or opening new data centers to capture a larger chunk of business from developers and users of large language models (LLMs). In a report published in October 2024, Bloomberg Intelligence estimated that demand for generative AI would push Microsoft, AWS, Google, Oracle, Meta, and Apple would between them devote $200 billion to capex in 2025, up from $110 billion in 2023. Microsoft is one of the biggest spenders, followed closely by Google and AWS, Bloomberg Intelligence said. Its estimate of Microsoft’s capital spending on AI, at $62.4 billion for calendar 2025, is lower than Smith’s claim that the company will invest $80 billion in the fiscal year to June 30, 2025. Both figures, though, are way higher than Microsoft’s 2020 capital expenditure of “just” $17.6 billion. This is not something we usually cover, but John Deere has a lot of data that is interesting in the big picture of tech. The message from the company is that there aren’t enough skilled farm laborers to do the work that its customers need. It’s been a challenge for most of the last two decades, said Jahmy Hindman, CTO at John Deere, in a briefing. Much of the tech will come this fall and after that. He noted that the average farmer in the U.S. is over 58 and works 12 to 18 hours a day to grow food for us. And he said the American Farm Bureau Federation estimates there are roughly 2.4 million farm jobs that need to be filled annually; and the agricultural work force continues to shrink.
