How a new type of AI is helping police skirt facial recognition bans

Police and federal agencies have found a controversial new way to skirt the growing patchwork of laws that curb how they use facial recognition: an AI model that can track people using attributes like body size, gender, hair color and style, clothing, and accessories.  The tool, called Track and built by the video analytics company Veritone, is used by 400 customers, including state and local police departments and universities all over the US. It is also expanding federally: US attorneys at the Department of Justice began using Track for criminal investigations last August. Veritone’s broader suite of AI tools, which includes bona fide facial recognition, is also used by the Department of Homeland Security—which houses immigration agencies—and the Department of Defense, according to the company.  “The whole vision behind Track in the first place,” says Veritone CEO Ryan Steelberg, was “if we’re not allowed to track people’s faces, how do we assist in trying to potentially identify criminals or malicious behavior or activity?” In addition to tracking individuals where facial recognition isn’t legally allowed, Steelberg says, it allows for tracking when faces are obscured or not visible.  The product has drawn criticism from the American Civil Liberties Union, which—after learning of the tool through MIT Technology Review—said it was the first instance they’d seen of a nonbiometric tracking system used at scale in the US. They warned that it raises many of the same privacy concerns as facial recognition but also introduces new ones at a time when the Trump administration is pushing federal agencies to ramp up monitoring of protesters, immigrants, and students. Laws in Montana and Maine sharply limit when police can use it—it’s not allowed in real time with live video—while San Francisco and Oakland, California have near-complete bans on facial recognition. Track provides an alternative.  Though such laws often reference “biometric data,” Wessler says this phrase is far from clearly defined. Zonal pricing ‘the start of a long road’ to mid-2030s, warns Cornwall Insight

The UK is unlikely to implement zonal pricing before the end of the decade, according to a report from energy analysis firm Cornwall Insight. Zonal pricing might not be rolled out until the mid 2030s, according to its research. Kate Mulvany, principal consultant at Cornwall Insight, said: “Zonal pricing would represent the most fundamental redesign of the GB electricity market in decades. “It is an incredibly divisive topic in the industry, and regardless of the purported benefits, its implementation is going to take significant time and resource. Political backing and industry support may help, but a go-live before 2030 remains incredibly unlikely.” Implementation of a regional pricing scheme, known as ‘zonal pricing’, could take up to five to six years after any decision is made, the analysis firm predicts. Port of Cromarty Firth awards £1.5m pre-construction deal

The Port of Cromarty Firth has kicked-off work on its £111-million expansion with the award of a £1.5m pre-construction contract to civil engineers RJ McLeod. The phase 5 project aims to expand the port’s current 9ha Quay West facility and meet the needs of new North Sea fixed bottom and floating offshore windfarms. A spokesperson for Port of Cromarty Firth told Energy Voice: “This pre-construction contract awarded to a Scottish company and major employer in the local area is the first of many which will be coming over the next few months. “It’s important to stress that this is the pre-construction phase. As we look to start construction in November, more contracts will follow, as we work to a schedule which will see our expansion completed in the first half of 2027.” Glasgow-headquartered RJ McLeod will undertake detailed design work and produce a construction programme and plan, as well as planning the procurement of critical materials. The pre-construction stage is due to be finalised in the summer. Pre-construction work RJ McLeod was founded in 1951, and has grown to employ over 400 staff across its offices, which includes Dingwall along with its Glasgow headquarters. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has reduced its Henry Hub natural gas spot price forecast for 2025 in its latest short term energy outlook (STEO), which was released on May 6. In this STEO, the EIA projected that the Henry Hub spot price will average $4.12 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) this year. In its previous STEO, which was released in April, the EIA forecast that the Henry Hub natural gas spot price would average $4.27 per MMBtu in 2025. The EIA increased its Henry Hub natural gas spot price forecast for 2026 in its May STEO. This outlook sees the commodity averaging $4.80 per MMBtu next year. The EIA’s April STEO projected that the Henry Hub natural gas spot price would come in at $4.60 per MMBtu. In its latest STEO, the EIA forecast that the Henry Hub natural gas spot price will average $3.46 per MMBtu in the second quarter of 2025, $4.19 per MMBtu in the third quarter, $4.68 per MMBtu in the fourth quarter, $5.10 per MMBtu in the first quarter of next year, $4.35 per MMBtu in the second quarter, $4.84 per MMBtu in the third quarter, and $4.89 per MMBtu in the fourth quarter. Exceed wins deal to operate Viaro’s Shell and Exxon assets

Aberdeen-based Exceed has secured a multi-million-pound contract to operate Viaro Energy’s recently obtained UK assets. Late last year, Viaro announced a takeover of Shell and Exxon’s joint venture Southern North Sea assets and has now awarded a well operator contract to the north-east firm. Exceed will take over operatorship of the 192 wells which make up Viaro’s One Gas West assets. The first order of business for the newly appointed well operator will be to handle the decommissioning of the 26 wells associated with the Leman Foxtrot and Golf platforms, which is set to kick off later in the year. Shell’s LNG Canada Plans First Exports as Soon as Late June

Shell Plc’s liquefied natural gas project in Canada, the country’s first large-scale export terminal for the fuel, is preparing to begin overseas sales as soon as late June. The facility is testing equipment ahead of the start of LNG production according to people with knowledge of the situation who asked not to be identified as the details are private. The export plans could change depending on the rate of progress at the project, the people said. The project remain on track to load first cargoes by the middle of 2025, an LNG Canada spokesperson said by email.  The project is set to transform Canada into an LNG exporter, providing much-needed supply to a market grappling with price spikes. Europe is increasingly dependent on the super-cooled fuel to replace Russian pipeline gas, a trend that has tightened global flows for the past several years. LNG Canada, located on the country’s western coast, is also convenient for Asian gas consumers due to the shorter transport time compared with tankers that sail from terminals on the US Gulf Coast, which mainly pass through the Panama Canal or around the Cape of Good Hope to reach the Pacific. APA to Slow Down Activity amid Price Volatility

APA Corp. said it is lowering its 2025 spending plan by $175 million to protect cash flow amid uncertainty in commodity prices. “Improved efficiencies and reduced activity will lower the company’s 2025 development capital by $150 million”, the Houston, Texas-based explorer and producer said in its quarterly report. “Combined with a $25 million reduction in exploration capital, these steps will protect free cash flow amidst volatile commodity prices. “As the company integrated the Callon acquisition, activity was reduced to 8 rigs, a level capable of maintaining oil volumes in the Permian”. APA completed its merger with Callon Petroleum Co. in the second quarter of 2024, in a $4.5-billion transaction that it said would raise its production to about 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd). The acquired assets included about 120,000 net acres in the Delaware Basin and 25,000 net acres in the Midland Basin, which are Permian sub-basins. APA has said the Permian is expected to account for about two-thirds of the production of the combined company. “With confidence in captured operating efficiencies, APA now expects to hold Permian oil volumes sustainably flat with 6.5 rigs”, the quarterly statement said. “Given current market conditions the company is in the process of reducing activity to 6 rigs by the end of the second quarter and adjusting its completion schedule to align with this cadence”. However, it is keeping its full-year United States oil production guidance at 125,000-127,000 bpd. Networking errors pose threat to data center reliability

Still, IT and networking issues increased in 2024, according to Uptime Institute. It is also important to engage with fluid vendors and regulators early, to understand chemical composition, disposal methods, and compliance risks. And associated socioeconomic, community, and business impacts are equally critical to assess. More specific environmental considerations include ozone depletion and global warming potential; the researchers emphasized that operators should only use fluids with low to zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) values, and not hydrofluorocarbons or carbon dioxide. It is also critical to analyze a fluid’s viscosity (thickness or stickiness), flammability, and overall volatility. And operators should only use fluids with minimal bioaccumulation (the buildup of chemicals in lifeforms, typically in fish) and terrestrial and aquatic toxicity. Finally, once up and running, data center operators should monitor server lifespan and failure rates, tracking performance uptime and adjusting IT refresh rates accordingly.

Clock synchronization allows for coordinated time-dependent communications between end points that might be cloud databases or in large global databases that could be sitting across the country or across the world, he said. “We saw recently when we were visiting Lawrence Berkeley Labs where they have all of these data sources such as radio telescopes, optical telescopes, satellites, the James Webb platform. All of these end points are taking snapshots of a piece of space, and they need to synchronize those snapshots to the picosecond level, because you want to detect things like meteorites, something that is moving faster than the rotational speed of planet Earth. So the only way you can detect that quickly is if you synchronize these snapshots at the picosecond level,” Pandey said. For security use cases, the chip can ensure that if an eavesdropper tries to intercept the quantum signals carrying the key, they will likely disturb the state of the qubits, and this disturbance can be detected by the legitimate communicating parties and the link will be dropped, protecting the sender’s data. This feature is typically implemented in a Quantum Key Distribution system. Location information can serve as a critical credential for systems to authenticate control access, Pandey said. Engineers rush to master new skills for AI-driven data centers

According to the Uptime Institute survey, 57% of data centers are increasing salary spending. Data center job roles that saw the highest increases were in operations management – 49% of data center operators said they saw highest increases in this category – followed by junior and mid-level operations staff at 45%, and senior management and strategy at 35%. Other job categories that saw salary growth were electrical, at 32% and mechanical, at 23%. Organizations are also paying premiums on top of salaries for particular skills and certifications. Foote Partners tracks pay premiums for more than 1,300 certified and non-certified skills for IT jobs in general. The company doesn’t segment the data based on whether the jobs themselves are data center jobs, but it does track 60 skills and certifications related to data center management, including skills such as storage area networking, LAN, and AIOps, and 24 data center-related certificates from Cisco, Juniper, VMware and other organizations. “Five of the eight data center-related skills recording market value gains in cash pay premiums in the last twelve months are all AI-related skills,” says David Foote, chief analyst at Foote Partners. “In fact, they are all among the highest-paying skills for all 723 non-certified skills we report.” These skills bring in 16% to 22% of base salary, he says. AIOps, for example, saw an 11% increase in market value over the past year, now bringing in a premium of 20% over base salary, according to Foote data. MLOps now brings in a 22% premium. “Again, these AI skills have many uses of which the data center is only one,” Foote adds. Microsoft will invest $80B in AI data centers in fiscal 2025

And Microsoft isn’t the only one that is ramping up its investments into AI-enabled data centers. Rival cloud service providers are all investing in either upgrading or opening new data centers to capture a larger chunk of business from developers and users of large language models (LLMs).  In a report published in October 2024, Bloomberg Intelligence estimated that demand for generative AI would push Microsoft, AWS, Google, Oracle, Meta, and Apple would between them devote $200 billion to capex in 2025, up from $110 billion in 2023. Microsoft is one of the biggest spenders, followed closely by Google and AWS, Bloomberg Intelligence said. Its estimate of Microsoft’s capital spending on AI, at $62.4 billion for calendar 2025, is lower than Smith’s claim that the company will invest $80 billion in the fiscal year to June 30, 2025. Both figures, though, are way higher than Microsoft’s 2020 capital expenditure of “just” $17.6 billion. The majority of the increased spending is tied to cloud services and the expansion of AI infrastructure needed to provide compute capacity for OpenAI workloads. Separately, last October Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said his company planned total capex spend of $75 billion in 2024 and even more in 2025, with much of it going to AWS, its cloud computing division.

The Moline, Illinois-based John Deere has been in business for 187 years, yet it’s been a regular as a non-tech company showing off technology at the big tech trade show in Las Vegas and is back at CES 2025 with more autonomous tractors and other vehicles. This is not something we usually cover, but John Deere has a lot of data that is interesting in the big picture of tech. The message from the company is that there aren’t enough skilled farm laborers to do the work that its customers need. It’s been a challenge for most of the last two decades, said Jahmy Hindman, CTO at John Deere, in a briefing. Much of the tech will come this fall and after that. He noted that the average farmer in the U.S. is over 58 and works 12 to 18 hours a day to grow food for us. And he said the American Farm Bureau Federation estimates there are roughly 2.4 million farm jobs that need to be filled annually; and the agricultural work force continues to shrink.
