The Overview Vibe
BITCOIN DID IT! IT TAPPED AND SOME $100K! And while it prompted your-coiner friends to call you to ask about the value of “hawk-tuah coin”, it also unleashed MOAR debt financing for Bitcoin-adjacent public companies, making their best MicroStrategy impression! Remember friends, just stack sats!
While hashprice and BTC price rose marginally this week during an inter-difficulty adjustment period (which also happens to be an ATH difficulty), we can start to see s19/m30 generation ASICs get plugged back in. Being marginally economic at retail hosting prices, their pricing is starting to creep up as they look to be plugged in in response to the price action this week. Has the floor for ASICs been tagged? Should I start hoarding last-cycle generation machines? Is that the real trade of this cycle lol?!
Seems like all Wall Street wants for Christmas is Bitcoin miner debt! Miners have raised ~$5B of debt since June. This week, MARA closed their latest $850M offering to refinance past debt and buy Bitcoin, while CORZ closed $550M in convertible notes to accelerate HPC infrastructure development. Former ASIC hoster now HPC hoster Applied Digital also refinanced past debt with a $150M note from Macquarie Group. Zigging where others zagged, Hut 8 announced a $500M at-the-market offering and a $250M in stock buybacks.
As capital markets juice up balance sheets, M&A continues to stay caliente. Outside of the United States, Bit Mining bought a 51 MW operation (rackspace and ASICs) for ~$14M (~$270K/MW) in Ethiopia. In South Carolina, Greenidge Generation (GG) exited their data center to AI data center operator Data Journey, holding on to 8% of future profits. While many ASIC-owning Bitcoin miners look to build their hodl, GG looks to pivot towards HPC data center development and leverage their real estate and energy access value. Might we see GG be a target for a private takeover by a well-capitalized AI compute player?
MARA continues to execute their energy integration strategy with their 114 MW wind farm acquisition (including a 250 MW interconnection) in the Panhandle of Texas. Not only will the site allow MARA to retire ASICs with zero marginal cost energy (most likely lower uptimes), but also potentially sell energy to the SPP grid when the opportunity cost calls for it. With the bull market chugging along, might we say that public Bitcoin miners will be energy companies (at least now energy assets) before Energy companies buy out public Bitcoin miners?
Even though my Longhorns derped this weekend, I had the best guacamole ever! EVEN WHEN WE DOWN, WE UP! I hope y’all recharged, called your mom to coordinate the white elephant party, and stayed hydrated! Remember Bitcoin and Bitcoin books are the perfect presents!
