TotalEnergies agreed to farm out a 40% participating interest in Block OPL257 offshore Nigeria to South Atlantic Petroleum Ltd. (SAPETRO).
Upon completion of the deal, TotalEnergies will hold a 50% operated interest in the block with SAPETRO (40%) and Conoil (10%) as partners. TotalEnergies became operator of the block following a 2025 asset interest exchange with Conoil.
OPL257 lies 150 km offshore Nigeria and covers an area of about 370 sq km. The block is adjacent to PPL261 where TotalEnergies (24%) and its partners, including SAPETRO, discovered Egina South oil field in 2005, which lies in 1,650 m of water and straddles both blocks.
Drilling of an Egina South appraisal well is expected in the coming months on the OPL257 side. The field is expected to be developed as a tie-back to the Egina FPSO about 30 km away.
The project has the potential to deliver up to 140 million bbl of oil reserves, according to SAPETRO.
Consolidating the partnership “paves the way for a quick appraisal campaign and subsequent development of Egina South in the success case,” said Mike Sangster, senior vice-president Africa exploration and production at TotalEnergies.
Completion of the farm-out agreement is subject to customary conditions, including regulatory approvals.
