The leaders of National Fuel Gas Co. will spin off the company’s Appalachian natural gas division, which today produces about 1.1 bcfd from about 1.2 million net acres in Pennsylvania.
The planned separation of National Fuel’s two units—its fully regulated natural gas utility serves about 1.1 million in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio—is expected to be completed in the second half of next year and give investors another avenue for betting on growth of Appalachian natural gas. IUG will be led by Justin Loweth, who has been leading NFG’s upstream Seneca Resources Co. subsidiary since May 2021 and its Midstream Co. unit since April 2022.
Executives say IUG’s assets have about 5 trillion cu ft of proved natural gas reserves, which equates to more than 25 years of inventory. Since 2023, the company’s teams have been focusing their development efforts on what they call their Eastern development area, which focuses on Tioga County, and have become about 25% more efficient in that time.

President and CEO David Bauer said Oct. 14 that there has traditionally been very little operational overlap between National Fuel’s utility and natural gas groups and that synergies have been financial in nature, allowing Seneca to grow its business with lower-cost capital. The combination of IUG’s growth in recent years and the healthy fundamentals of the natural gas industry means the time is right for a separation.
“IUG now has the scale and free cash-flow generation to stand on its own, making the financial synergies of our current business model less relevant than they once were,” Bauer said on a conference call.
IUG has about 1 bcfd in firm transportation capacity and has contracted for another 0.5 bcfd that will start entering service in November and grow through 2030. Loweth said that growth will help his team take advantage of demand from LNG exporters, power generators, and data center operators.
The IUG team has been bringing online between 25-30 wells per year of late but Loweth said being an independent company will let it pursue a faster development pace.
“We’ll just be able to think about [IUG’s acreage] in ways to perhaps grow it faster or more than we might have previously,” he told analysts. “I would just holistically view it as more opportunities for growth pathways and flexibility about how we pursue that.”
